The authors claim to have collected a "species new to science". However they err. They have failed to check the ISI offerings of the past, otherwise they would have known that plants from the vicinity of Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, have been distributed already in 1991 as Echeveria walpoleana. Moreover they based their comparison of E. tamaulipana and E. walpoleana on Walther's unuseable description (Echeveria, p. 252, 1972), having failed also to check Charles Uhl's comments in Haseltonia 6, 1998. That means their description is a superfluous re-description and re-naming of E. walpoleana. The name is to be listed in the synonymy of E. walpoleana.

POWO treats the species as valid, which is our taxonomic source.

Yeah I know, but I wonder if their source is aware of the problem I cite in the first comment. They have shown to be open to reasoning in the past, I don't see why they wouldn't (potentially) update this based on our discussion.

The problem with the genus Echeveria is that E. Walther did an extremely poor job in terms of taxonomy and nomenclature. In short, what doesn't fit, he made it fit. There will also be a publication on this topic in the near future. For this reason, the genus would have to be completely revised.
Unfortunately, if the descriptions in E. Walther's book "Echeveria" are used as comparison material, this only causes more confusion. That's what happened in this case.
Unfortunately, POWO is too cumbersome in this regard and of course cannot research for each species whether the authors have done everything correctly.
In my experience, you can rely on the publications on www.crassulaceae.ch, even if Miss Bischofsberger is not a trained botanist.
It´s also my opinion to treat Echeveria tamaulipana as a synonym of E. walpoleana.

yo creo que se deberían comparar genéticamente pues una crece en la vertiente árida de la sierra madre y la otra en la vertiente húmeda, en diferentes tipos de vegetación, suelo/roca y altitud
