UC Santa Cruz Fort Ord Natural Reserve is a UCNRS site in Marina, CA. We focus on research, teaching, and public service. We work with students from local schools, CSUMB, UCSC, as well as researchers from all over to learn and teach about our wonderful local habitat. On May 12, 2018 we'll be using iNaturalist to photograph and geographically pinpoint our findings and will come back together at the end of the day to upload our records, share stories, and help each other with identifications. We hope to grow our reserve species lists, but most importantly celebrate our fellow creatures and each other. This will be a great way to introduce the reserve to community members and students that have yet to visit UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/spring-2018-bioblitz-ucsc-fort-ord-natural-reserve-tickets-41912313859
On May 12 2018 UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve will open it's gates to the public for the event from 9am - 2pm. Access to UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve is by permission only, and all participants must meet reserve staff at the main reserve gate the morning of the event. A reserve use waiver must be signed by all who enter the reserve, which will be provided the day of the event.
We will meet at the main reserve gate at the end of Neeson Road (adjacent to Marina Municipal Airport). The physical address of this gate is 711 Neeson Rd. Marina, CA 93933 (this is not the office/mailing address for UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve). There is parking near the gate, and attendees should expect to hike the trails at the reserve, bring water and appropriate shoes and clothing for exposure to the elements (sun, rain, etc.). After an initial meet and greet there will also an opportunity to explore a second location at the Southern portion of the reserve, which is a few minutes drive from the main reserve gate.
