Window strikes are a leading cause of death for birds. The problem can be mitigated, but we need to understand how many birds hit windows, when they hit windows, which species are most affected, and, most importantly, which buildings put birds at greatest risk.

Here at LSU we know that window strikes are a problem, but we haven't sampled in an way that will allow us to suggest solutions. We will focus on taller buildings with major areas of glass- here's the map of buildings to sample- https://sites.google.com/view/lsu-bird-window-collision-rese/target-building-data

Please help us by sampling buildings following our protocol.
This project is modeled on work done at a network of universities in recent years- see https://sites.google.com/a/augustana.edu/eren-bird-window-collisions-project/home or https://sites.google.com/site/osubirdwindowcollisions/ for more details. Notice that this work has led to successful mitigation- let's hope we can improve LSU's campus.

How to get involved-

1. Contact Dr. Phil Stouffer (pstouffer@lsu.edu), LSU School of Renewable Natural Resources. You will get training and a link to the signup sheet.
2. Use your link to sign up for the dates and the buildings you will survey.
   
3. Follow the survey protocol https://sites.google.com/view/lsu-bird-window-collision-rese/survey-information-and-protocol
4. Complete your survey and enter your data whether or not you found any birds- https://tinyurl.com/ydxwe8tb
5. Enter data for birds (live or dead) here on iNaturalist.
6. Deposit bagged and labeled dead birds at the LSU Musuem of Natural Science or with Dr. Stouffer. In a pinch the bird can go into your freezer overnight. Make sure you include a label in the bag.
