The Springtime of Death

“It was autumn, the springtime of death. Rain spattered the rotting leaves, and a wild wind wailed. Death was singing in the shower. Death was happy to be alive."
Tom Robbins - Still Life of a Woodpecker

Students of Tom Robbins and residents of our corner of the planet will probably recognize the above quote as a description of autumn in the Pacific Northwest, the season of transition, the season of things leaving, season of salamanders and mushrooms and slugs.

...mushrooms and slugs. Detritovores. Natures undertakers...

Autumn is a time of reclamation and recycling, composting. The summer tourists leave and the winter residents return and everyone who stays sets about to do the hard work of cleaning up and battening down and prepping for the next year.
