From the headwaters of the northern branch of the Potomac River at the Fairfax Stone in West Virginia and the headwaters of the southern branch in the southern branch, the Potomac River has its headwaters in northwestern Highland County, Virginia downstream to the confluence with the Monocacy River in Frederick County, Maryland. This is where the Potomac River is very often still wild and iconic.
