The Appalachian Highlands region is a biodiversity hot spot for amphibians and is home to some rare reptiles including one of the rarest turtles in the world, the bog turtle. Many issues threaten the diversity of amphibians and reptiles in this region including climate change, wetland drainage, deforestation, and river pollution.
As part of the Orianne Society’s broader efforts to conserve species in the Appalachian Highlands, this citizen science effort aims to improve our understanding of the status of amphibians and reptiles in the region.
We will work with you through organized citizen science events and volunteer survey efforts to document the biodiversity of amphibians and reptiles in the region. We encourage you to explore this beautiful part of the United States and to upload data you collect on reptiles and amphibians. The data you collect will be used by the Orianne Society and our partners to conserve these amazing animals.
